Our precious Leopold, just turned 2 and joined the crew when he was still just a little sugar glider joey at about 8 weeks old. Me and my husband were at a convention when we first met these adorable creatures, I fell in love instantly and admittedly fell for the sales pitch, and the rest is history (I explain this all in detail below). Leopold's name actually used to be Luna and until he landed himself at the vet for a cyst on his liver we had no idea she was actually a he, and hence Luna became Leopold. As for the cyst on his liver we were lucky to have a phenomenal exotic pet vet who preformed a tricky surgery to remove it, she was successful and Leopold went on to make a full recovery. He is a miracle we are thankful for every day, it was so scary when we almost lost him. Leopold always had his bonded buddy Link (our other suggie) by his side, they had been together from the day we brought them home. In a heart wrenching turn of events, while Leopold was going through surgery his buddy Link got really sick and we ended up losing him within days of Leo's surgery. Leopold ended up bonding very strongly with me and we spent a ton of time together while trying to find him new buddies because they should never be housed alone, they are incredibly social and form tight social bonds. We eventually ended up adopting his new girlfriends Anastasia and Guinevere (confirmed females hehe). Leo's favorite things are yogurt drops, mirror toys, feathers, going places with us, and he is closely bonded with me.
Sugar gliders are exotic pets, they are sold under pretense of being simple, easy, and cheap to care for. This is NOT true, they require a lot of daily work, a huge cage or room, a special diet, and most importantly an exotic veterinarian. If you run across people selling them at conventions or fairs Buyer Beware (don't be fooled like we were). Please do your research, they are incredibly cute but require a ton of time, work, special accommodations, and no matter how hard we try, humans are unable to recreate their natural environment or their diet. However, now that we have them we will never stop trying to get as close as possible. Me and my husband built a huge custom enclosure so they have sufficient space. They require warm temperatures so they have their own bedroom that is temp. controlled, and I spend a minimum of an hour a day preparing their food, cleaning, doing their dishes, and more. I also have hand made all their pouches and toys by hand because a lot of the "safe" toys were indeed not safe at all. They also have a strong odor if fed a correct diet, the sales people will try to tell you they have very little smell but that is also untrue. So if someone tells you they are easy, please do not believe them.
